Dwarf pitcher – Cephalotus follicularis - 12cm pot
A very unusual plant: unlike the other carnivorous plants, the dwarf pitcher primarily targets crawling insects (ants and the like)
.
It forms 2 kinds of leaves „normal“ leaves in winter and the trap leaves in summer. The traps start growing as small, hairy balls directly on the leaf stalk. Unlike the similarly constructed pitcher plant traps, however, these do not hang in the air but are mostly embedded in the surrounding substrate. The lid lowers when temperatures get too high to reduce evaporation of the precious digestive fluid.
As a special trick, the dwarf pitcher has translucent „windows“ – in this lid, so the victim does not notice that it has already crawled far too deep into the supposed nectar source. Once it has fallen into the digestive juices, a smooth zone prevents it from climbing out of the liquid
.
Name: Dwarf pitcher
.
Botanical name: Cephalotus follicularis
Pot size: 12cm pot
Native: Southwest Australia
Care
The dwarf pitcher grows very slowly
.
Repotting should be avoided as the plant does not tolerate this well at all, prefer to give it a large enough soil right away.
The soil should be constantly moist, but not waterlogged.
In summer it should be kept at around 25°C, in winter it goes dormant and should be kept at 10-15°C.
Watering should be done exclusively with rainwater or distilled water.
Tip:
Never fill water into the pots – also be careful when watering
.
Never fertilise!!!
