Red carpet berries, also called partridge berries or mock berries, are low, carpet-like dwarf shrubs that spread slowly by root runners. The foliage is glossy green in summer, with some leaves turning a striking red in winter. The small, whitish-pink flowers in summer are especially attractive to bumblebees.
In fall, red, spherical, aromatic-scented fruits form and remain on the ground-covering plant until late spring.
Water the plants regularly, especially before winter, or frost dryness may occur. If the plants are intended for permanent planting, rhododendron soil should be used for this purpose and later also fertilized with rhododendron fertilizer. If they are only looking for an attractive eye-catcher for one season, normal plant soil will suffice.
The attractive plants are very suitable for combination with other low-growing bog plants or heather plants, e.g. budding heather. They are also popular for use as ground cover.
