The chewing gum bush, which smells of mint chewing gum, originally comes from South America and is often called the Argentine mint bush. Its leaves are edible straight from the bush and refresh the breath. It is also an excellent tea plant. Desserts and fruit salads can be given a fresh taste by chopping a few of its leaves and mixing them in. The leaves can easily be stripped from the branches for this purpose.
Perennial indoors
Location: Sunny
Growing height: up to 150 cm
USE
The gum bush is closely related to lemon verbena and, like it, is an excellent tea plant. The leaves contain essential oils that have a very beneficial effect on digestion and the whole body. They are used fresh or laid out loosely in a dark, airy place to dry.
CARE
Although the gum bush is extremely robust, vigorous and quite cold-tolerant, it is not hardy in our latitudes. It should therefore be kept frost-free but as cool as possible over winter. The gum bush sheds its leaves during this time and sprouts again in spring. Ideally, it should be grown as a container plant. It can be cut back frequently and will continue to grow vigorously until the next harvest. Seed-resistant variety.
