Ludisia discolor belongs to the orchid family. Unlike most of its relatives, it does not form aerial roots but digs into the ground. This is where the name Erdorchide comes from. It owes its second nickname jewel orchid to its red-brown leaves with fine, light pinstripes.
In the cold months, terminal and hairy stems form, which protrude far beyond the leaves.
The white and yellow orchid flowers are comparatively small when viewed individually and therefore grow on large, richly stocked flowers.
